This unit had a lot going for it. The best part was the location: directly on the beach and right beside the access walkway to a lovely sandy beach, very walkable distance to the boardwalk and lots of great restaurant choices, and across the street from pretty Carolina “Lake” Park. (The park is really more like a large pond, but it seems to be a local “hub” and while we were there -offseason- we saw yoga classes and line dancing classes and on Saturday there was a nice-sized artisan fair. Also great place to walk the pup! We were glad we chose this location.) It’s also across the street from the Veggie Wagon which offers lots of healthy grab and go items, coffee and pastries, and a selection of wine and local beers. Nice for happy hours and beach picnics.
The unit overall had a nice updated look. Unlike most of our trips, we didn’t do ANY cooking, so I can’t really speak to the “fitness” of the kitchen but it had everything that we needed. A natural drawback was that because it was a first floor unit (although you do have to climb a flight of stairs to get to it) you couldn’t actually see the beach. It has a nice screened-in patio which was our room of choice most of the time and offered great ocean breezes, but not a view. It was great for taking out the puppy, tho. The unit was on the smaller size for a two bedroom but the porch helps a lot. It was great for the three of us. And having two parking spaces could really be key in the busy season. Pool is small (and not heated) but looked great for kids.
So the reason for 4 stars instead of 5 was mainly the cleanliness of the unit. Traveling during CoVid gives you a little pause naturally but we were pleased to find all of our linens packaged in plastic directly from the outside cleaning company. That feels safe and clean. BUT if you have to pull out the bed to put on your own sheets, there shouldn’t be wrappers dust bunnies under there. Both tubs had shower enclosures with significant mildew in the doors, the ceiling fans and air vents were extremely dusty, and when I spilled some water and lifted up the jute rug under the table to wipe it up...there was an entire sand dune under there! The management company was responsive but when I listed some of these things, the response was “oh you are looking for a DEEP cleaning, not a move-in clean! Hmmm...They did send a cleaner back out immediately to spray some bleach on the tubs, broom under the beds and lift up the corners of the rug to vacuum up the sand, but the impression had been made and some things were left undone. I understand there are new owners and it’s the tail end of a long season - maybe there are some kinks to work out between owner and management but as a renter I just need it to be clean and I don’t care the reason, especially as this unit was not inexpensive.
Two other things: Although the website says no beach chairs are provided, we were given a key to the owners storage and it full of beach chairs and pool noodles etc. that would’ve been nice to know because dragging ours from home took up valuable packing space. Also, the bathtubs are oddly TALL. That is a weird note I know, but we are tall people (husband is 6’6”) and they were awkward for us. If you are in any way physically challenged, that combined with the flight of stairs to get to the first floor should be noted.
Sorry this is such a long review, but I see that I am the first under this management company so I hope details help. We rent condos several times a year and I read lots of reviews before choosing.
Overall, we enjoyed the beach and will be back to this area in the future. Lots to do here in CB and in the Wilmington area.
