Kure Beach Ocean-Front Fishing Pier

One of the main visitor attractions is Kure Beach pier - the oldest fishing pier on the Atlantic Coast of the United States. The pier, built in 1923, stretches 700 feet long into the Atlantic Ocean and is open 24 hours a day from Good Friday to the Sunday after Thanksgiving. You can expect to pay a small fee if you choose to fish; otherwise, visiting the pier is free. If you want to fish, you can buy everything you need once you arrive, and an on-site crew is there to help or answer questions.

Fort Fisher

There are several things to do should you visit the Fort Fisher landmark. History buffs can see the Fort Fisher state historic site and museum where they fought the biggest land-sea battle in the Civil War. About 10% of the original fort is still standing. But you can also see a seacoast gun, go to the visitor center, participate in the audiovisual program, and walk the outdoor trail.

If you are interested, you can visit North Carolina's First Heritage Dive Site. Lying 700 yards offshore, the Condor is one of the best-preserved shipwrecks, and you can view an actual Civil War blockade runner.

The North Carolina Aquarium at Fort Fisher is ranked one of the ten best aquariums by USA Today and the Travel Channel. It is obvious why, as it includes over 2500 animal residents. You can reach into tanks to touch sea life or attend a daily dive show. If you prefer to take the behind-the-scenes tour, you will witness feeding time for the more friendly animals. Lastly, you can also take yoga classes at the aquarium.

Beyond impressive, the 235,000 gallon Cape Fear Shoals Tank is home to stingrays, sharks, moray eels, and several other species of fish. There are also two play areas; the Adventure Reef is indoor, while the Nature Play area is outside.

Beyond the historic sites and aquarium, Fort Fisher state recreation area, the heart of Kure Beach, offers some more outdoor activities. You can walk several miles of trails through maritime forests, marshes, and beaches. You can also enjoy picnics, sunsets, or live music at the beach. The Air Force Recreation Center holds live concerts during the summer. Additional lawn concerts and the annual Seafood, Blues, and Jazz Festival are great for music lovers.

Oceanfront Park and Pavilion

This large public green space boasts many activities great for those on vacation. Families who enjoy the outdoors will love the playground and the oceanfront boardwalks lined with swings. The open-air pavilion with an ocean view is excellent for weddings, concerts, or family-friendly events. Kure Beach ambassadors host and educate guests on a Sunday evening beach walk along the ocean dunes stretching across the Atlantic.

If you visit between May to October, you can also enjoy the Boogie in the Park Concerts or Storytime by the Sea. The Pleasure Island Sea Turtle Project volunteers host weekly Turtle Talks on Monday nights to educate visitors about the different sea turtle species in the Kure Beach area.

Kure Beach's Coquina Rock Formation

Visitors will be awed by the beach's mossy hard rock outcropping. Visible only at low tide on Kure Beach, the formation is anywhere from 12,000 to 80,000 years old. The beautiful site is formed from the fusion of seashells and coral.

Zeke's Island Reserve

If you are a nature lover, you will want to visit Zeke's Island Reserve. You can venture there one of two ways, via boat or a kayak tour. Rest assured, once you are there, you can tour the lagoon-like habitat that is a sanctuary to a lot of wildlife and numerous sea birds.

WWII Bunker

History lovers will want to make sure they hit up a real live concrete bunker dating from the WWII era. If you take the Basin Trail, you can visit Fort Fisher Hermit Robert Harrill's former home. He lived in the bunker from the 1970s and lived off the land foraging in nearby salt marshes and oyster beds.

Joe Eakes State Park

Another great place to visit for families on vacation at Kure Beach is Joe Eakes State Park. Families can choose to participate in various activities such as golf, tennis, bocce ball, and basketball. Kids will love the large playground. Bring your pets as there is also a dog park for your canine companions.

Fun In the Sun

Kure Beach is a great place for beach rentals because of the number of ventures in which you can participate. This underdeveloped, six-mile stretch of Atlantic shoreline welcomes sunbathers, surf fishers, shellers, and bird watchers. Look for keyhole urchins, sea stars, and whelk shells as you walk along the beach. Keep your eyes out for at least 16 threatened/endangered animals like pelicans and Loggerhead turtles.

If you're looking to eat out or enjoy the nightlife, Kure Beach is a great destination. With plenty of restaurants to choose from, you can enjoy some time off from cooking. Also, a short drive away, nearby Carolina Beach and Wrightsville Beach both have fun and lively nightlife. One of the destinations you might want to hit is the Fat Pelican, known as one of the "diviest dive bars."

Water Activities

Besides diving at the heritage dive site, you can kayak, stand-up paddleboard, or surf. Kayaking is available along the Cape Fear River, and you can even travel to Shark Tooth Island. Kure Beach boasts two surf schools, and the variety of break and waters is perfect for all surfers levels. If boating is your thing, you can either rent your own or board the Fort Fisher/Southport Ferry, a 45-minute drive on scenic tour.
